“What is the recipe for successful achievement? To my mind there are just four essential ingredients: Choose a career you love, give it the best there is in you, seize your opportunities, and be a member of the team.”
Benjamin Fairless

On a Personal Pathway to Success

As students at Lakeside Middle School start to explore possible career choices the Career Development webpage will provide a wide range of information. The site is designed to assist students and parents as the student begins to plan for high school, post-secondary education and/or training, and the workforce.
While the middle school student may be too young to truly commit to a career choice, he/she is not too young to learn that the understanding of one's self is crucial in choosing a career that will be satisfying and rewarding.
With that in mind, South Carolina is implementing a program entitled "Personal Pathways to Success." The purpose of this program is to assist students as they develop goals for their future and for specific careers.
Students explore many careers opportunities from kindergarten through eighth grade. In the eighth grade each student uses this exploration, along with interest and ability assessments to select a career cluster of study for high school. This planning is completed with an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) created and signed by the student, parent, and a counselor.
As the Career Development Facilitator at Lakeside, I will work with students, teachers, and parents throughout the year as we take a walk along the Pathway to Success.

How would you like to be an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic?

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and paramedics drive ambulances and give patients emergency medical care. They determine a patient’s medical condition at the scene, stabilize the patient, and then drive him or her to the hospital. EMTs and paramedics work outdoors in all types of weather and the work can be very stressful. Some patients may become violent, and EMTs may be exposed to diseases as they care for those in emergency situations. They are often on call and work long hours any day of the week.

In order to truly enjoy a career as an EMT and Paramedic you must be someone who has a caring personality, can remain calm in emergency situations, and can stay focused on the needs of the patient.

Subjects to study: driver’s education, health, biology, chemistry, anatomy, English, foreign languages

Courses offered at HWEC that will assist you in your goal of becoming an EMT and Paramedic are as follows:
